January 2, 2020-Seward Ranger District

Dear Trail Enthusiasts, Welcome to a New Year, it seems so strange to put the year 2020 in the Subject line.  I hope you are enjoying the cold, crisp weather and new snow fall and that the rest of our Winter 2020 Winter Season continues to follow suit.

Beginning tomorrow all areas of Seward Ranger District that are normally open to Winter Motorized use December 1 – April 30 will open EXCEPT for the following:  Lost Lake and Primrose Trailheads and Snow River access to Nellie Juan.

LOST LAKE AND PRIMROSE TRAILHEAD ACCESS TO LOST LAKE IS CLOSED AS IS SNOW RIVER ACCESS TO NELLIE JUAN.

See attached map and if you would like to view the official Forest Order wording please visit the Chugach National Forest web page.

While all other areas of Seward Ranger District are open to motorized please keep in mind the snowpack at most access points have thin snow cover over ice and travel will not be ideal for sno-go until more snowfall covers obstacles and adheres to ice. In addition to minimal snowfall, you may come across fallen trees that you will not be able to get around with this being the first time for winter motorized use this season, at a minimum you will want axe and handsaw (always a staple in your gear)?

Please continue to also visit the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Center for additional information on other areas of the Chugach open or closed to Winter Motorized and of course for Avalanche information.  https://www.cnfaic.org/

Right now the Quandrantids Meteor Shower is visible and the peak is January 3 beginning around 11:00 p.m. into the early hours of January 4, here is a link for more information.0

Thanks everyone for being understanding with our need to protect the ground resources and be Happy with me that we are now allowing some motorized outings, and as always be prepared and safe.
